Background

For as long as I can remember I have loved being active. From Highland Dance to basketball to golf and of course, yoga.

I earned a BSE in Physical Education from SUNY Cortland and was a Physical Education/Health teacher and later Athletic Director at a private school in New Jersey for 5 years.  Moving out of academia, I worked for Amtrak for 11 years and finally retired from IBM in 2014.

Certifications

I have been a practicing yogi since 2005. As retirement loomed and I was deciding what to do next, Red Elephant Yoga decided to offer teacher training right here in Fuquay-Varina and it seemed like a perfect fit. It took 2 years to complete and was closer to 650 hours when our class graduated and I earned my RYT500 certification.

As part of my continuing education, I completed my certification in the patented program “Let your Yoga Dance” at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in 2014. A 100 hour program emphasizing the use of yoga, music and the chakra energy centers to bring a heart healthy practice to all populations.

Teaching style

I trained in the Vanda Scaravelli/Esther Myers tradition which focuses on the anatomy of yoga and bringing the pose to each and every individual person, not the person to the pose.  I have concentrated on working with the senior population and have worked with many individuals with physical limitations.  I have learned to adapt yoga to fit the needs of each person, concentrating on balance, building strength to maintain an active lifestyle and providing a safe environment in which to do these things.

What inspires you in your teaching?

I decided to open Breathing Space here in Fuquay-Varina to provide a place in our home town for our unique wellness needs. We were a group of like minded practitioners looking for a home and I was fortunate to find the cute white house on Depot Street and the vision began. I continue to explore what the town is looking for and find ways to make that happen.  I also wanted to provide space for wellness practitioners to be able to share their gifts to the public at a reasonable cost.

Which areas of yoga do you cover in your teaching?

For those wanting emphasis on stress reduction or health recovery, I teach a gentle practice that explores the different poses as they work in your individual body.
